A bookcase in English walnut , inlaid with Brazilian rosewood veneer .
~

The interiors of the drawers are made of black walnut and Tennessee aromatic cedar , with one arranged to contain photograph wallets . They travel on runners made of western yew .The brass  drop handles were antiqued using vinegar and local cedar to give them a warmer glow .

Trade in new Brazilian rosewood is now prohibited as it is considered an endangered species : I was able to salvage some veneers from a liquidation sale which were probably made in the 1920's . This wood has long been treasured by cabinetmakers as one of the most beautiful . It is situations such as this which are leading manufacturers and consumers to increasingly specify responsibly harvested wood : timber from 'certified well-managed' sources now accounts for 10% of global timber trading , and that is growing by 100% every year . (Certified Forest Products Council)

As in all of my pieces , I used traditional joinery throughout , in the form of dovetails and wedged mortises and tenons , thereby giving it the structural integrity to withstand the constantly shifting humidity and inevitable wear and tear of centuries .

Hand-rubbed oil and wax finish .
